Corowa was established in 1858. The Corowa Conference in 1893 marked an important point in the movement for federation of the Australian colonies. Corowa was proclaimed a town in 1885; it became a shire in 1955 and a municipality in 1963.

Situated in a section of the Riverina that produces wool, wheat, cattle, and fruits, Corowa has flour mills, timber mills, malt and stock-feed processing plants, and wineries. This banner reflected the agricultural heritage of the area.

Corowa Shire was established in 1955 through a merger of the Corowa Municipality and Coreen Shire. It included the towns of Corowa, Howlong, Balldale, Coreen, Daysdale, Rennie and Mulwala.
